Trailhead for hiyaker Richard Bailey (Boldly go where I go boldly)
Introduction:
Aloha,
With the arrival of summer 2006 I'd lived in Hawaii for more than a decade. But for whatever reasons I only started hiyaking Hawaii that very summer. Natasha, my daughter, and my ex-wife were on the mainland for a month and I read an article about the fitness benefits of hiking. Feeling alone, overweight and stressed from work, I did some research on the web and found a hiking trail not far from my house. After that first experience I was hooked. So enjoyable was it, I described it in detail and emailed everyone I knew. After my friend Andy read the story, he suggested we team up on future ones, being unbeknownst to me at the time, an avid hiker himself. The rest, as you will discover, is hiyaking history.
In the stories I describe only my experiences and in no way intend them to be an authoritative guide on any hikes or kayaks. There are numerous other better sources, online or print, for detailed information on hiyaking in Hawaii.
Use these instead if you intend to ever follow in our footsteps. Still I do hope you find the stories enjoyable. Please let me know if so.
Happy hiyaking!

P.S. Hiyaking is a composite word I came up with to easily describe a hiking and/or kayaking adventure.
