Hiyaking in 2009

Fourth Year (2009):
Another year, yet another hiyak page to create.
This year flew by like the ones prior. A major highlight was becoming a Sierra Club hike leader. I plan to lead my first hike to Ka'au Crater in February. I found I lacked the time and truth be told the inclination to continue writing up hiyaking stories. Though I want to record the hiking events since I know even a short time later I will have forgotten it all, it just takes too much effort. Even my attempt at doing one write up a month failed.
I continue to take lots of pictures (I bless the digital camera inventor :-) and late in the year came up with a photostory style that combines pictures with short descriptions set to music.
I've slowly refined the method, but still have a lot to learn. Twenty five years ago I could've figured this out in a flash. Today, knocking on 50, it's a struggle to remember my name most days :-( Time waits on none)
My explorations into new and different parts of Hawai'i(mostly O'ahu) continued and I can talk at length about many trails now. Many new hikes, especially the advanced ones, I did only partway. Each time I tell myself next time I will go a little further. This year I seemed to do many repeat hikes though. And it was good to know what to expect on those.
I've also become more recognized on the trails and recognize more people on the trail too.
All in all, it was a great year hiyaking as my hiyaking experiences have grown by leaps and bounds (I love a subtle pun, don't you ;-)
Like last year in the few stories below you will continue to read of my sole and soul searching.
As always, Happy and Safe Hiyaking!

Hikes:

  • One of Oahu's toughest hikes, Puu Ohulehule, easily defeated me. (1/18/2009)

  • Unexpected danger led to expected teamwork in Moanalua Valley (3/28/2009)
  • Infamous Makapuu Tom-Tom is now a famous favorite hike (7/26/2009)
  • A rare hike at Kawainui led to a rare pool (9/6/2009)
