Knowledge is empowering:
When hiyaking this is especially true. So here are some of my favorite links and books that can benefit you if you have the opportunity and decide to try out hiyaking in Hawaii. It is especially important you review the tips and suggestions sections of each link or book before venturing out.
I'll pass along the hiyaking rules I got when I first started. Don't litter, don't fall off the trail and don't let the mosquitoes bite.
My own tip is don't sightsee and hiyak. While hiking watch your footing constantly and stop when you want to sightsee. While kayaking watch the ocean constantly and sightsee only when the wind and waves are favorable.
Think safe out there.

Books:

The gold standard for hikers in Hawaii are the well known Hiking Guides for Hawaii, by Stuart M. Ball, Jr. Don't ever hit the trails without having read one or all of his books.
About.com has a list of their top ten hiking books for Hawaii.
If you're more into walking and strolling then Kathy Morey's Oahu Trails is a good book to buy. May be too easy for your hard-core hiyaker though.
Dayhikers delights are a dime and dozen in Robert Stone's Day Hikes on Kauai and Day Hikes on Maui.
A great adventure story by a great adventure story teller Audrey Sutherland, can be read in her Paddling My Own Canoe.
Also by Audrey is Paddling Hawaii . No finer book has been written about kayaking in Hawaiian waters.
