Hiyaking in 2006

First Year (2006):

Even if you respect time, it does not respect you. Time zooms by regardless. Meanwhile it ravages your body and mind and then takes away those you love. Acceptance is the key to handling its disrespectfulness.
So in many respects 2006 may seemed to have passed quickly and yet rereading the hikes and kayaks below showed that quite a bit of exploring was accomplished. Also with my aging memory which seems incapable of storing many details any more, time appeared to speed up in 2006. But overall 2006 was a great year.
Even with a late start to hiyaking it brought my friend Andy and I many great times and fun memories. And it brought my daughter, Natasha, and I much closer at a time when she is experiencing many emotional changes as she transitions from child to teenager.
So below you'll find all our inaugural hiyaking chronicles for 2006. Though now it seems to have come and gone in a flash, in the stories below you will find a lot of both sole searching and soul searching.
Happy Hiyaking to you!

2006 Hikes:

  • My first hike was a search for why this trail was nicknamed the Jackass Ginger Trail (7/23/2006)

  • The demons followed me all the way atop Mariner's Ridge (8/26/2006)

  • This was followed by a hellish climb to the summit of Koko Crater (9/16/2006)

  • Finally broke the curse with my wahine (girl) Natasha solving the riddle of Kalawahine Trail (9/30/2006)
  • Little known Mauumae Valley Trail scared Natasha with flying golf balls (10/7/2006)
  • Hiking the back of the sun was fiery fun on the Kuaokala Trail (10/14/2006)

  • Time, steepness and sword-wielding hala teens killed our dreams of topping Puu Piei Summit (12/9/2006)

2006 Kayaks:
